Three Shaw Players Earn CIAA Weekly Honors

(Raleigh, NC) – Shaw’s Ednick Belizaire, Darnell Evans, and Fred Sparkman earned All-CIAA honors for their efforts in the Bears’ 31-28 win over Elizabeth City State on Saturday.


Ednick Belizaire (C, Sr., 6-3, 278, Miami, FL) was named CIAA Offensive Lineman of the Week. Belizaire anchored an offensive line that allowed Shaw to tally 237 yards on the ground, primarily by running "up the gut." In addition to opening those holes, Belizaire recovered a Shaw fumble in the end zone, scoring a touchdown for the Bears.

Darnell Evans (CB, Fr., 5-8, 181, Madison, NJ) was named CIAA Defensive Back of the Week. Evans pulled in two interceptions, returning one for 54 yards and a touchdown. He totaled 94 yards in interception return yardage and had six tackles (three solo and three assists) in Shaw's victory.

Fred Sparkman (ILB, Sr., 6-2, 225, Columbia, TN) was named CIAA Linebacker of the Week. Sparkman continues to lead the Shaw defense, this week totaling 13 tackles (nine solo and four assists) including two tackles for a loss of seven yards.

The win evened Shaw’s season record at 2-2, and they are 1-0 in the CIAA. They next travel to Salisbury, N.C., to take on Livingstone on Saturday, October 2 at 1:30 p.m.
